NORTHAMPTON— The Northampton Rotary Club has pledged $2,600 to support the Northampton Survival Center’s renowned Kids’ Summer Food Program. This program bridges the summer nutrition gap by providing supplemental groceries to children who rely on subsidized school breakfast and lunch programs during the school year. The Kids’ program, now in its 19th year, serves tens of thousands of pounds of food to approximately 600 children each summer. Offering a “choice” pantry where clients can choose nourishing and kid-friendly items that work best for their children, the program plays an essential role in helping families fill the nutrition void that looms large during the summer months.

The funding from the Rotary will enable 2,600 healthy meals to be created for children throughout Hampshire County who would otherwise be hungry or under-nourished while schools are closed. The Rotary reports “the club hopes that this will become an annual project and plans to host a major fundraiser to support the effort this Fall” (details will be available shortly).

On Aug 17th volunteers from the Rotary went to the Center to dedicate an hour of service. The club recognizes that food security for kids is critically important. If children don’t have access to nutritional meals then all other aspects of their lives suffer the consequences. It’s hard to believe that this is a huge issue right in our own backyard-but sadly it is. The Northampton Rotary Club is happy to help this very important program.
